Modeling Populations of Flour Beetles

چکیده

Mathematical models can be used to describe and predict the complex dynamics of biological phenomena such as animal populations. There is a trade-off between the amount of mathematical and biological complexity one can include in a model; fewer simplifications lead to a more biologically accurate model, but may come at the cost of adding dimensions or parameters. This increases the difficulty of mathematical analysis and may render some analyses intractable. A critical part of evaluating a mathematical model is connecting it with data. Data is used to give numerical values to a model’s parameters and to judge the adequacy of the model to describe the dynamics of a population. Once parameter values are obtained, the parameterized model can be applied to additional data to test its predictive power. Computer simulations and mathematical analysis can be used to investigate the dynamics of the model and interesting dynamics found may suggest future experiments that could further validate the model.

Distribution and efficacy of pyrethrin aerosol to control Tribolium confusum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) in food storage facilities

A field test was conducted whereby adult Tribolium confusum (du Val), the confused flour beetle, were exposed in Petri dishes lined with filter paper and containing 0–2000mg of flour, to a pyrethrin–CO2 aerosol inside an empty warehouse. Applications were made according to label directions, and beetles were exposed to the aerosol for 2 h. After exposure, knockdown was assessed, and beetles were...

The effect of periodic habitat fluctuations on a nonlinear insect population model

Laboratory data show that populations of flour beetles (1ribolium), when grown in a periodically fluctuating volume of flour, can exhibit significant increases in numbers above those attained when grown in a constant volume (of the same average). To analyze and explain this phenomenon a discrete stagestructured model of 1ribolium dynamics with periodic environmental forcing is introduced and st...

An Experimental Test of the Relationship between Genetic Variation and Environmental Variation in Tribolium Flour Beetles.

The hypothesis that a component of genetic variation for polygenic fitness traits is maintained by environmental heterogeneity was tested using an experimental system involving two species of flour beetles, Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum. Replicated populations of each species from a number of environmental treatments were analyzed for various fitness components following almost 60 generat...

Movement behavior of red flour beetle: response to habitat cues and patch boundaries.

Movement behavior determines the success or failure of insects in finding important resources such as food, mates, reproductive sites, and shelter. We examined the response of female red flour beetles (Tribolium castaneum Herbst: Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) to habitat cues by quantifying the number of individuals that located a patch (either with or without flour) in response to the distance rel...

Impact of food source on survival of red flour beetles and confused flour beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) exposed to diatomaceous earth.

A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effect of a flour food source on survival of red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), and confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum (DuVal), exposed to the labeled rate (0.5 mg/cm2) of Protect-It, a marine formulation of diatomaceous earth. Beetles were exposed at 27 degrees C, and 40, 57, and 75% RH in 62-cm2 petri dishes. When beet...

Long-term monitoring of Tribolium castaneum in two flour mills: seasonal patterns and impact of fumigation.

Data from long-term Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) pheromone trapping programs in two flour mills was used to evaluate the impact of structural fumigations (n = 23) on pest populations. The two mills differed in mean number of beetles captured and proportion of traps with captures of one or more beetles, but in one of the mills the mean number of beetles captured was reduced after implementing a ...
